When there is something to be harvested or tended to, our natural reaction is to check on it. This connection with a garden and the outdoors has been shown to increase health, way beyond just the nutrition gained from the crop.
By incorporating edibles into landscape design, we are not just putting in a veg patch, but we are using the edible plants as an aesthetically pleasing feature. This way we can make the garden bountiful as well as beautiful.
A truly sustainable future is one where all needs are met at the place they are needed. Localising food production is an achievable solution that is available to most people. By designing edible perennial ecosystems that require little maintenance and self-perpetuate we are designing for a greener future where diverse organic food is abundant and available. Sustainable landscapes that satisfy.
Our aim is to create low maintenance landscapes that fulfil multiple functions, through an in-depth survey and analysis of the site, we then design using the guiding principles of nature from the site.
By incorporating edibles into our designs, we aim to:
- Produce high nutrition high value, organic food
- Create a direct connection with our food
- Reduce packaging food miles and transport
- Inspire all to connect with plants and the outdoors
As we are designing landscape systems, most of the edibles used are perennial, this means that once established they will continue to produce yields every year and, in some cases, the yield will increase year on year.
Using lots of perennials introduces many new plants into our diets as the majority of what we eat are annuals. Plants that fulfill multiple functions feature a lot in our designs. Take Calendula for example. To many, it is just a Marigold – but did you know about all its functions?
Here are just a few:
- Edible petals of the flowers
- Medicinal properties of the flowers
- Great for attracting pollinators
- Great for attracting pest predators
- Flowers all year in the right spot
- Self-seeds
By using edibles in a landscape, we are encouraging a deeper connection with the garden and outdoor space.
