Spaces with Soul
Ecological, environmental, and even edible landscape designs for your garden or grounds.
Landscape Gardeners in Sussex
SolSeed designs landscapes with a strong focus on creating a functional ecological system that works in harmony with both people and the environment. Outdoor spaces that require minimal intervention while boosting biodiversity.
A unique aspect of our landscape design service is the use of edible planting to maximise the function from plants. Our integration of edible plants and crops, perennial self-perpetuating systems, shrubs, and flowering plants; creates an outdoor space that works for the environment and everyone.
Our ongoing landscape maintenance services combine, ecological understanding, science-based knowledge and a passion for nature, to ensure your outdoor space continues to thrive.
Ecological Environmental & Even Edible Landscape Design
Our strong focus on ecological, environmental, and edible landscapes is what makes SolSeed stand out from your typical landscape designer. We work with nature and not against it.
- Ecological – Through ensuring that local plants and habitats are maintained plus new spaces are created by designing an environment, which blends seamlessly with the surrounding habitat.
- Edible – Through incorporating edible plants, fruits, and vegetables that can be harvested periodically, designing a landscape that is truly sustainable and saves on food miles and unnecessary packaging and waste.
- Environmental – Through ensuring that special consideration is taken of the effects imposed on the environment. Introducing ways to minimise any potential negative impacts and providing a solution which is beneficial to the surroundings.
- Permaculture – Through using a forward-thinking design system that is based on principles found in nature, the purpose being to create a living environment that is harmonious, sustainable, and productive.

Landscape Design for Domestic & Commercial Applications
Our knowledge and experience of designing ecological outdoor environments enables us to create sustainable and quality outdoor spaces:
- We enjoy working closely with professional architects, designers, and sustainable building contractors to help bring your visions to life. An ecological landscape design could help secure planning permission. An outline landscape design is often now required at the very early stages of a new development.
- Our design work covers bespoke landscaped gardens for homes and estates. From small but perfectly formed garden spaces to large and uniquely challenging grounds, we can design the ideal solution that transforms and makes best use of the area.
- Working closely with schools and particularly forest schools, we have seen first-hand the level of interaction between the children and the outdoor space. The benefits of children interacting with nature are extensive. In fact, we have been able to bring the typical forest school practice to more traditional school settings.

Garden Rooms
We can design and build the perfect structure for your garden, while artfully blending it with the natural surroundings. We always consider the health of the ecosystems and the environment in all our designs and implementations.
Our roundwood timber-framed garden rooms and pagodas are made from sweet chestnut poles in their natural round state. All of which are locally grown and harvested by our local woodsman.
Using traditional hand-cut joinery we craft a beautiful, bespoke, one of a kind garden space your perfect escape or home office.

Planning Permission
The careful and meticulous considerations we undergo in every one of our landscape projects allows us to also provide design services perfect for sensitive environments where planning permission is required. Our attention to detail and care and consideration of the impacts on the local environment ensures that the designs we produce work with the surrounding environment and not against it.

The Science
Understanding more than just what is on show to the human eye is incredibly important in designing a landscape that is sustainable and built to last. Through soil science, we assess the biochemistry of the area to allow us to create a bespoke design that is made specifically for your particular environment. No two outdoor spaces are the same. Microclimate has a large impact on our design as every space is individual. There can be many microclimates in one garden.
There are many other factors that differentiate your garden from even a neighbouring garden of the same size. Buildings and trees can affect the amount of sun and shade, parts of the garden receive. Slight elevational changes can affect where water tends to settle, and the makeup and depth of the soil layers fluctuates continuously.
With a wealth of knowledge in soil science and biochemistry, we focus on designing a functional outdoor area that is sustainable, eco-friendly and above all making the space a work of heart. For more information on all the brainy stuff effecting landscape design, please click below.
About SolSeed Landscapes
Making your outdoor space a work of heart
SolSeed is a family run business based in the beautiful historical Sussex town of Lewes. Brett and Hayley are a well-rounded team. Brett has over 15 years of experience in landscaping and has the inspiration and the knowledge of ecological, environmental, and edible landscapes while Hayley draws the intricate and bespoke designs bringing their joint vision to life.
Following a first review of your outdoor space, we produce a Preparatory Report. This outlines our suggestions and includes detailed plans containing information on land contours, climate, plants, animals, light, shade, seasons, soil type, etc. This report is a fundamental building block in the design of your outdoor space.
Once we have completed a Preparatory Report for your outdoor space, that bit you have been waiting for begins. The talented Brett manages the design and installation phase; taking the utmost care and attention in creating the perfect outdoor space that mirrors the agreed report.
Following installation, ideally managed by SolSeed, we produce an optional Maintenance Plan, which sets out our recommended requirements including activities, frequency, specialist services needed, etc. It also includes a full calendar and itinerary of the ongoing care required. An invaluable toolkit to ensure the longevity of the outdoor space.
We have been nurturing landscapes of the future for a number of years now and have built up quite a reputation. To find out a little bit more about the talented SolSeed team, please click below.
